Yet Another True Story About Stupid Studies:

Tuesday, August 27, 2002

It might surprise people that some of what they read here is made up. Although I've made an effort to fully document the true stuff, and have fairly routinely avoided the least bit of documentation on the more, ah, imaginative stuff, I guess sometimes its hard to distinguish... which is kind of my point from time to time, like today:

Fact or Fiction?

Doctors in the United States are now required by federal law, to provide interpreters for any patient who comes to their office and can not understand English.

Answer: Fact! According to an article in the Boston Globe, 8/27/2002, page C1, all doctors, everywhere in the US, are now required to provide an interpreter to anyone who needs one, if they accept any federal money (i.e., any medicare, medicaid) for anyone! Yep, you speak Uzbeki-slavo-malian and you walk into a podiatrist's office in West Buttpatt Iowa, and ol' Doc Jones needs to go out and hire a Berlitz graduate fer ya!

I love this! I think we should extend the benefits to all people everywhere. Like, wherever you go in this great country of ours, if you don't understand what's happening, someone should have to pay to make sure that you do.

Like if you're a big, fat moron and you go into McDonald's everyday for a double Big Mac-Supersize-with 2 Apple pies-for-a-dollar... McDonald's should have to pay for someone who speaks BigFatMoronic to explain to you that you should consider a salad shake with the low-fat vinaigrette.

But then again, I guess that means I'd have to hire a guy to tell people what was real and what was not... hmmm....
