Yet Another True Story About Stupid Studies:

Thursday, August 29, 2002

Speaking of pinheads, what is with these major league baseball players? Somebody tell me if I'm out of line, but aren't we talking about illiterate, otherwise unskilled and unschooled young men who are about to refuse to play because the millions of dollars per year that each of them gets for running around, throwing and catching a ball and hitting it with a stick doesn't seem to be enough? Don't these guys spend most of their time sitting down or standing around? Or, from October to March, on vacation?

So, who is supposed to feel sorry for them? People bringing home $8.50 an hour, working 60 hours a week to gross 30 grand in their best year?

Fundamentally, I understand the ballplayers' argument: its that the owners are reaping huge profits that should be paid to the workers. Fundamentally, the ballplayers seem to just not get it at all: This is America, it's called capitalism, and ballplayers are very lucky people.

I mean, if you don't like making millions of dollars a year, playing for an owner who is reaping huge profits from your labor in the ball field, I've got a couple of ideas for you: You could take a job in an American factory, for thousands of dollars a year, working for an owner who reaps huge profits from your labor, or you could go home, and make a hundred dollars a year, working for an owner who is reaping huge profits from your labor in the sugar field or the coffee plantation?

To paraphrase the great Chico Esquela, "Baze bawl bean berry berry gude to zhew!" Sorry if its harsh. Go ahead, tell me what part I got wrong.
