YATSASS: Beating a Dead Horse to Make It Walk

This study takes the cake, but not by getting up and walking over to the table. And the writing on that cake says We need a new category of anecdotal evidence by which we can classify and ridicule this study.Where Type A refers to plainly accurate assumptions from anecdotal evidence, and Type B evidence is clearly BS, we now need a sub-classification that describes lengthy studies which were entirely unnecessary due to the fact that they replicated and proved other lengthy studies, long since accepted without question. [Attention All Grant Writers: This is not a call for a study!].

Please read on, and we will continue or discussion forthwith:

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Even moderate levels of physical exercise prevent heart disease and prolong life, and the degree of benefit increases as the level of physical activity rises, according to a report released Monday.

Believe it or not, this finding [memo to Stockholm: keep your eyes on these guys] is part of a 46 year study of some people in Framingham, Massachusetts.

"Our study suggests that following an active lifestyle is an effective way to achieve healthy aging," Dr. Oscar H. Franco, from Erasmus MC University Medical Center Rotterdam in the Netherlands, and his colleagues conclude.

First off, what makes these guys think that they can apply these findings to the rest of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, let alone the nation, or the world? Well, that answer is easy, the study has been done, so many times and in so many ways, that the evidence itself has become Type A.

So here's my suggestion. When a study is conducted that examines a subject that could easily be resolved by looking merely at Type A evidence (exercise good, couch potato bad. More exercise better) and that that evidence is in fact not simply rooted in anecdote, but borne out by previous studies, what we have, is a study that investigates what I propose we call Type AA evidence.

This type of anecdote, rather than simply having become an old wives' tale or a proverb as a result of thousands of years of lay observation, is one that has come into being as a result of lengthy and expensive scientific study, the conclusions of which have been widely accepted by those dumb and ignorant townsfolk. In other words, the evidence is anecdotal, but the anecdote is not based on uneducated observation of random events, but because the good people read and accepted the last 42 studies that concluded the same thing.

What should we do with people who investigate and study matters that are already part of the Type AA lexicon?

I think the answer lies in the definition itself. These sods should attend 30 AA meetings in 30 days, and make amends to Framingham, and the rest of the world for wasting all this time and money. Then they'll have only 10 more steps to sobriety...
