Stone Age feminism? - The Boston Globe

Men should hunt. Women should stay home and cook. Haven't the guys been saying this for years and years? Who knew our very survival was at issue? Sometimes you just have to go with folk wisdom. Now there's science:

Today's Boston Globe reveals that the extinction of the Neanderthal race was caused by women joining the hunt. Professor Steven L. Kuhn at the University of Arizona says that archaeological evidence shows that Neanderthal women, unlike Homo sapien women, joined men in hunts at a time when many hunters died as a result of being kicked, stomped or gored by the wild animals they pursued.

"Putting the reproductive core of the population - pregnant women, mothers of infants, children themselves - at such danger could have put Neanderthals as a whole at serious demographic disadvantage," he said.

Not only would women suffer casualties, Kuhn said, their full participation in the hunt would mean they were not harvesting wild grains and other foods that could sustain their roving bands when game was scarce.

In other words, professor, the race would have survived if the girls would have just let the guys go off to the cabin in the woods, just the guys... and they stayed home and cooked?

Although the article says that Neanderthals possessed the FOXP2 gene, suggesting that they were capable of "human-like language," it seems they were incapable of articulating the very words that could have saved them.

"Honey, please... it's better this way. Just me and the guys. It's just one weekend.... No, I promise, Lucy isn't going to be there either!"
