Taking Candy From Babies and Crap from PC-Idiots

Congratulations to Principal David Castelline of the Underwood Elementary School in Newton Massachusetts. Although there are still a full 9 weeks to go in 2005, I'm going to stick my neck out and give you the 2005 Jellyfish Award for being both the most spineless and most gutless person to make the news in 2005. You managed to edge out Dennis Brown director of the C.D. Hylton High School Marching Band by just a micron or two of your gelatinous outer membrane. You actually cancelled Halloween to appease some selfish whining yuppies!

According to a WCVB TV-5 newsreport:

...students at the Underwood Elementary School would ordinarily have celebrated Halloween with a party, in costume, enjoying crafts and candy.

But activities were canceled and a letter went home to parents explaining that Halloween activities were, "offensive to the religious beliefs of some members of our community. In fact, several families are so uncomfortable with the school-sponsored activities associated with Halloween that they keep their children home on this day." "We've changed the practices around school because I think some of those practices were really uncomfortable for some of our members," school principal David Castelline said.

First, Mr. Castelline, what, if anything, were you thinking? Second, what, if anything, were you thinking?

Even if one were to agree with your decision [and that would be hypothetically only] why did you wait until now? If parents only raised this issue in recent days, wouldn't a response of "Give me an effin' break!" been appropriate? OK, probably not. But couldn't you have said something like, "This day of crafts and activities related to Autumn, and a widely loved childrens' holiday, that dates back scores of years has been a tradition here at Underwood since 19XX. While I appreciate your concerns, they have been voiced too late in this year's schedule for us to change our plans. Naturally, if you are uncomfortable with the day's plan, we will understand if you choose to keep your child home."

Then, at a later date, after pretending to have given due consideration, couldn't you have gotten back to those nitwits and said, "Give me an effin' break?"

Maybe I'm speaking, er, out of school... just which practices were causing such discomfort? The traditional morning recess burnt offering of a lamb to Beelzebub? Maybe it was the lunchtime sacrifice of a virgin's blood to our savior Satan. I must admit, it is getting harder and harder to find a virgin at an elementary school. Don't tell me it was the dressing up like a policeman or a fire-chief (Those Homophobes!). Perhaps bobbing for apples in this bird flu-AIDS-herpes-fifth disease world is overboard. Or maybe, just maybe, these people were putting their foot down when it came to handing out snack size candy bars, where the wrappers actually weigh more than the candy?

Seriously, man (and I use that term very loosely,) what else is there to say?

Hey, I'm Jewish. I don't exactly love that the "Winter Choral Concert" features Deck The Halls and Adeste Fidelis, but I've never seen the need to make a literal Federal Case out of it. At least we did away with Away in a Manger

So, here we go, down the slippery slope:

"Hey, I'm [Jewish, Muslim, Vegan]... No more playing football with a pigskin

"Hey, I'm Native American... no more celebrating Thanksgiving or Columbus Day"

"Hey, I'm Hindu... no more celebrating St. Patrick's Day. We want a holiday celebrating snakes."

"Hey, I think Jimmy Carter was a great president... I want peanuts at all lunch tables."

"Hey, I'm a monotheist. I don't like Cupid flying around my kids. S-can Valentine's Day

"Hey, I have English Ancestors... Patriot's Day and Independence Day are abhorent to us."

"Hey, I'm a capitalist pig and I'm raising my kids that way… I object to Labor Day and all it stands for."

"Hey, I'm a Commie-Rat-Bastard and I'm raising all my little rat-bastards the same way… celebrating Veterans' Day is like celebrating the Holocaust. But that capitalist pig has it all wrong… I object to not celebrating Labor Day!"

"Hey, am a illitrit cracker sumbench… ain't it a hoot that after allat innegrashun and eekwal rights stuff 'n' allatt, THEY don't git ta go to OUR schools on Martin Luther King Day!! God Bless America!"

Maybe it should just say "Do Not Take This Drug If You Are Alone"

Health News Article | Reuters.com:
"WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Drugs to treat erectile dysfunction need stronger warnings on their packaging about the risk of blindness, U.S. consumer group Public Citizen said on Thursday in a petition filed with health regulators."

'nuff said.

YATSASS: Walking The Dog is Good Exercise!

Daily dog walks work off the pounds

People! Sometimes my job is just too easy, but hey! I'm not complaining:

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Dogs may be more than man's best friend; they may also be a tool for losing weight, according to a new study that shows making a commitment to walk a dog -- your own or someone else's -- leads to increased exercise and weight loss

Congratulations to Rebecca Johnson at the College of Veterinary Medicine's Research Center for Human-Animal Interaction at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Oh, not for discovering that walking a couple of miles a day might be good for you, but for getting funding for a FIFTY (50) WEEK STUDY!(!!!)

There were numerous valuable conclusions drawn from this ground breaking work:

The walkers "bonded with the animals, improved their flexibility, balance and ability to walk, lost weight and felt better about themselves so it was a very positive thing all around," Johnson added.

Gosh, and not only that! The study also shows that the more someone does walk, the more they can walk!

Sadly however, 50 weeks was not enough to answer many of the other burning questions surrounding this issue:

What about walking alone?

Walking with other people?

Walking a cat?

I mean cats can walk, but can you walk a cat?

Ms. Johnson! We need more answers!

And Herewith Follows a List of other Banned Band Songs...

'Devil' Cast Out of Pr. William

Some people just don't know how to have a good time, and some people have too much time on their hands. But enough about me...

Apparently, the C.D. Hylton High School Marching Band, an invitee to play at the Atlanta, Georgia based Peach Bowl, has had to change its prepared set list. Earlier this month, a letter to the editor of the Potomac News took issue with the outfit, a governmentally funded high school playing the Grammy® Award winning song The Devil Went Down To Georgia because it would be a violation of the First Amendment's imperative to keep church (Devil) and state (high school marching band) separate. Proving that us jocks and those freaks were right, and that Bandos are gutless geeks, head bando Dennis Brown, pulled the song from the set list.

So far, only the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, has found this to be a reasonable reaction, having previously stricken God from the Pledge of Allegiance. (Unconfirmed scuttlebut around the court has it that the justices are hard at work trying to remove the supreme being from money, lobbying for legislation that would replace the bible upon which witnesses are asked to swear before taking the stand be replaced with a used copy of The Davinci Code, and changing the bailiff's imprecation at the start of every court session from God save the [your state or commonwealth here] and these great United States to It's all good.

But, in fact it's not all good. Much of it is bad, and a usurpation of our rights as a free and democratic people. In order to reclaim some of that freedom and democracy, here, with a tip of the hat to Dennis Brown, Jason Joy, James Wingate, Joseph I. Breen, and Geoffrey M. Shurlock is a list of other compositions which shall no longer be publicly performed at or near governmentally funded assemblies, including but not limited to sock hops, dances, so-called "mixers" and/or proms:

God Only Knows (What I'd Do Without You)
Devil in a Blue Dress
Stairway to Heaven
Tears in Heaven
Knockin' On Heavens Door
Angel of the Morning
Celebration (by Kool and the Gang)*
Lady Godiva
Thank God I'm a Country Boy
(You're The) Devil in Disguise
Devil in Her Heart
Sympathy for the Devil
Winchester Cathedral
He's So Fine and/or My Sweet Lord
Theme from Saint Elmo's Fire
Anything by James Brown a/k/a Godfather of Soul
All Eno compositions
The British National Anthem

*my list, my rules...

YATSASS: Excercise Helps Keep You Trim and Fit

Oh, I hope they spent a lot of time and money on this one:

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Couch potatoes may quickly accumulate a type of deep abdominal fat that contributes to diabetes and other metabolic problems -- but regular exercise can prevent or even reverse the process, according to researchers.

Their study of overweight, sedentary adults found that those who started working out on treadmills and stationary bikes tended to lose, or at least not add to, their stores of visceral fat -- fat that accumulates around the abdominal organs.

In contrast, their peers who remained sedentary showed a substantial gain in visceral fat over just 6 months, according to findings published in the October issue of the Journal of Applied Physiology.

OK, Doc... lemmee get if I got this straight; excercise good, fat bad. Did I get it right? I keep mixing them up.

Congratulations Dr. Cris Slentz at Duke University. You've conducted a YATSASS® that proves what I think we call a Type A Theory.

Turkey sees no major health threat due to bird flu

I Prefer the Title Immunity Booster Rooster

Experts call for creating US bird flu czar

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States needs a top official, backed by authority and cash, to prepare for a possible bird flu pandemic, experts said on Wednesday.

But the United States, and most other countries, are so badly behind in preparing for disease outbreaks in general that it will take years to catch up, they told a briefing of Congressional staffers.

Czar is so dark ages ago. Then again, so were pandemics, we thought...

Hey Jesse, it was the best they could do at the time, know what I'm sayin'? Everything's relative, bro.

Be thankful you weren't there when it happened, and that you had safe transportation, water and shelter when you got there. And stop sniping. There's plenty of time for that, after all of the world's inequality and bad luck is taken care of, right?

Tom Cruise Knows The History of Obstetrics...

And baby will make 3 for Tom, Katie
By Donna Freydkin, USA TODAY

Lovebirds Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are expecting their first child together.

Cruise's sister and publicist, Lee Anne Devette, confirmed the great expectation to People magazine Wednesday and said both the couple and "the entire family (are) very excited."

She declined to reveal details about the due date or the sex of the child. But she said Holmes, 26, "has never felt better."

Interviewed separately, Mr. Cruise jumped up and down on a couch screaming, "I love this fetus, I love this fetus."

Later he proclaimed that there would be no ultrasound, amniocentesis, or other "false" medical testing. "I know the history of obstetrics. I've studied obstetrics. Have you studied obstetrics? I've studied obstetrics!," shouted the somewhat animated father-to-be.

Calling Lamaze "big money corporate hogwash" and deriding epidural blocks as "merely numbing and not treating the problem," Cruise announced that Holmes will simply give birth to her child, where and when it is time.

Ms. Holmes was unavailable for comment, but rumored to be hastily thumbing through Dianetics, trying to find reference to natural childbirth.

Jorge Posada: What up wit dat?

OK. I hate the Yankees. OK, I am not Robert Redford. I also do not have Redford's money, or Posada's money, which ESPN estimates to be $11,000,000 per year.

But, if I had Posada's face and Posada's money, I'd find a good plastic surgeon and give him or her but a small portion of my money and have him or her take a large portion of my nose and put it on my chin.

Did I mention that I hate the Yankees?
